Elia Simeona Ruiz is a Chilean journalist from the Pontificia Universidad Católica of Chile. She has a diploma in Public Administration (Universidad de Chile) and a diploma in Gender Equality (Universidad de Magallanes). Now she is pursuing another diploma in Antarctic affairs (Universidad de Magallanes).
During her first years as journalist, she worked at El Mercurio, the principal newspaper of Chile (1988-2005). From 2005 to these days, she is editor-in-chief of La Prensa Austral, the oldest and most important newspaper of Punta Arenas (Magallanes and Chilean Antarctic Region, Chile). She created the scientific supplement Ciencias in 2007, dedicated to informing about Antarctic themes, scientific investigations, climate changes and environment problems. In 2013, she founded the magazine Fem Patagonia, dedicated to gender issues. For that mass media project, the Magellanic government distinguished her in 2015 for her contribution to women’s rights.
Since last year, she has been a member of the Magallanes Climate Emergency Commission.
